Band 1: Ultralight (0.4-0.6 oz/L). Packs like the Gossamer Gear Kumo (0.54 oz/L) and Pa’lante Simple (0.39 oz/L). Minimal frame, minimal padding, maximum weight efficiency. These packs are designed for total loads under 20 lbs.

Band 2: Lightweight (0.6-0.8 oz/L). The Osprey Exos (0.66 oz/L), Granite Gear Crown2 (0.62 oz/L), and Gossamer Gear Mariposa (0.43 oz/L). These packs carry 25-35 lbs with functional suspension systems. This is the sweet spot for most 3-season backpackers.

The Mistake Most Hikers Make

Most hikers buy one pack and use it for everything. A 65L, 4 lb pack for weekend trips is like driving an F-250 to the grocery store. It works, but you are hauling unnecessary weight.

The counterargument: buying two packs is expensive and most hikers cannot justify it. This is valid. If you are buying one pack, optimize for your most common trip type, not your most extreme trip type. If 80% of your trips are 2-3 nights, buy a lightweight 50L pack, not a full-featured 65L pack.

The Contrarian Take: Capacity Matters Less Than You Think

Pack capacity is measured in liters, but liters are a crude metric. A 60L pack with no organization (one giant compartment) requires more compression and careful packing than a 50L pack with smart pocket placement. Effective capacity depends on pack design, not raw volume.

The Gossamer Gear Mariposa is listed at 60L. The Pa’lante V2 is listed at 36L. But the V2’s exterior mesh, side pockets, and roll-top extension give it an effective capacity closer to 45L. The Mariposa’s internal compartment wastes space without a structured packing system.

Ignore liter counts. Pack your actual gear into the actual pack and see if it fits. Liter measurements are manufacturer marketing, not trail reality.

How to Calculate Your Ratio

  1. Weigh your pack empty (not the manufacturer’s stated weight; weigh it on a postal scale with all straps and removable parts attached).
  2. Note the stated capacity in liters.
  3. Divide weight in ounces by capacity in liters.
  4. Compare to the trip-type table above.
